Blinded by light
After a day of picking up garbage in the city of Kumasi, it was time to empty the waste truck “on top of the hill”. On top of the hill because we had to drive up a vast hill of waste before emptying the truck. After driving up the 80 meter high pile of waste, the view on top was spectacular. I could oversee the city of Kumasi with the waste dump widely stretching out around me.
We were not the only car unloading its container. Around us a traffic jam of waste trucks was developing, waiting for their time to unload. The moment the waste truck unloaded, I saw a sign on the side of the truck. It said: “we keep Ghana clean”. For a truck that was just unloading its cargo I found it a bold thing to say. However, there was an industry there, I just needed to find it.
