During our break, we were able to dive a bit deeper into the life of Baba. While smoking a joint for relaxation, he told me that, as a waste picker, people often look down upon him. Waste picking is seen as a shameful job. In fact, Baba’s friends do not know that he is doing this work. If they would know, Baba would be seen as a ‘zero’, as a ‘non-human being’.

 

This means that the people on the waste dump are very important to him, they are a family. However, it can be difficult from time to time. Next to the joy and happiness, there is also this more painful part of the job.
